There are many ways in which we can reduce the impact of Travel on the environment. By being responsible about the decisions that we make when it comes to the way that we travel we can each contribute to minimising the overall negative effects of Travel and Tourism

In 1980, cars accounted for 79% of the total distance we travelled. Today, a little over 25 year′s later, that figure has risen to over 85%. In order to reduce emissions it is essential than we cut the number of cars on the road. There are lots of ways that we can do this - it is not easy to influence people′s travel behaviour but it is not impossible. We just need to break the habit of climbing in to the car every day.If every car commuter used an alternate mode of transport on just one day of the working week we would be reducing car usage by 20%.

Information regarding sustainable travel is available from
the Department for Transport
and the Association for Commuter Transport (ACT).

Use Public Transport.

Using public transport reduces traffic congestion and unhealthy air pollution not just for short journeys in town but also when travelling further afield. Some large employers will offer interest free loans to help employees buy season tickets and some run their own bus services for example to and from train stations. Find out about public transport (buses, coaches and trains) alternatives to travelling by car from Traveline.

Walk or Cycle where possible

Encourage members of your community to walk or cycle when they are going on short journeys. Between 1990 and 2003, the average distance people walk has fallen by 19%, per person, per year. Walking or cycling helps to reduce carbon dioxide pollution and is a good form of physical activity.

Walking and cycling are good for our health, good for getting us around, good for our public spaces and good for our society. For all of these reasons we need to persuade more people to choose to walk and cycle more often.

Some Countries have government-supported ′Walk to School Campaigns′ encouraging pupils to walk to school more often. The campaigns generally promote regular walking among pupils.

Children, parents, school teachers and community leaders can also take part in ′Walk to School Weeks′, Check with your local department of transport

Car Sharing

Car sharing is an effective way of reducing peak hour congestion, easing parking problems at work and reducing emissions. Car sharing involves two or more people sharing a car for their journey to and from work. Not only does this deliver both financial (both to employer and employee) and environmental benefits but, importantly, it also means that staff do not have to give up the convenience of the car.

Reducing the need for Travel

In some circumstances it can be as easy to work from home as it is at the office. Thanks to email and the internet, remote working is a practical proposition for many employees and allows them to fulfil their work commitments without the need to either travel to the office or to clients′ offices. Whilst this method of business is not suitable for every individual or business scenario, practices such as working at home and video conferencing at least make remote working an alternative worthy of consideration.
